enDescription
When alcohol is consumed to excess it is associated with a range of well know and defined effects. Monitoring the frequency of these conditions permits an examination of the effectiveness of measures to reduce alcohol related harm. Alcohol related death is the most serious of these outcomes. This has been monitored on an annual basis in Scotland and the UK for a number of years. On a UK basis, Scotland has the highest prevalence of alcohol related deaths for both males and females. Approximately twice as many men are found to die from alcohol related causes as women. A comparison of the trend in alcohol related deaths for both males and females is shown.
