Much of this report provides information on the health behaviours such as smoking, exercise and drug use which directly determine young people's health status. There are, in addition, a number of other personal factors (self-esteem for example), and also wider social and environmental issues which influence such behaviours. It is essential to examine some of these background influences on the health behaviours of young people, if a good understanding of schoolchildren's health is to be gained. This report, therefore, starts with an exploration of these background factors.en
