Description
This paper describes a comparative study of a small sample of abusing and 'at risk' families. Criteria derived from knowledge of abusing families in treatment and related to events within the family dynamic as well as physical features of age and sex have been used by community health visitors and may provide an instrument of identification of those families at particular risk . The development and use of a health visiting practice model provided the framework for collecting information about the families and in particular their total health needs, and for describing the health visiting role with both groups. Independent scrutiny of this information by mixed discipline assessors has tested the model for its effectiveness and has been used to increase knowledge and understanding of the health visiting role and method of working with such families.
